Here we go again! Keighley Cougars RLFC, having come second in their league, had to fight the hard way to get promotion. As always the RFL put as many obstacles as possible in their way but they navigated their way through the labyrinth of the play offs and are on the up. The clubs at the top of the Co-operative Championship will tell you that winning is not the way to progress further. In a world where transparency is everything and where people are encouraged to work hard in order to succeed, the road onward to Superleague is anything but. Widnes are going up, despite coming nowhere in the competition. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Of course you don’t even need to be an established club like Widnes. If you play your cards right (and play just over the border in Wales) you can go straight to Superleague without passing go. Although we’ve already seen this year where that leads. So far this year Keighley have had to play with most of the main stand out of commission. On Mothers’ Day all the ladies entered free and later in the season all the blokes who went to the game got two free pints. Keep it up, you can’t keep them down! (The Cougars, not the 2 pints.)
